The ProLactisTM Process : the Bioreactor

• Polypropylene tower of approx. 7.5m high by 1.5m sides according to design;
• Inoculation with a yeast strain which adheres and fully coats the internal surfaces within 10 to 12 days ;
• Feeding nutrients to the yeast by continuous gentle dispersion of whey or other carbohydrate sources from the top of the tower. As the liquid flows downward, key nutrients are absorbed by the yeast cells that multiply by mitosis and fall out by gravity into the collecting system at the bottom;
• Bioreactor operates at ordinary temperatures, ideally between 30OC / 35OC ;
• Two products are simultaneously collected from the tower : (i) yeast cells, and (ii) an aqueous effluent of low COD ;
• The yeast is subsequently separated using centrifugation or another suitable method.
• Our prefabricated modules are easy to install and operate.
• Effectively converts lactose, alcohol and other soluble sugars to a high-protein biomass.
• Up to an 95 % COD reduction achievable or more.
• Effective with liquid by-products containing up to 12 % dry matter.
• Can support wide pH and temperature deviations.
• A continuous process in a closed environment, easy to control.
• Uses inexpensive complementary nutrients (ammonia or urea nitrogen and mineral salts).
• Operates with natural ventilation.
• Allows soluble phosphorus fixation without the use of heavy metal additives.
• Requires a significantly smaller investment than extended aeration systems.
• Produces a high value-added dietary adjuvant for livestock animals.
• Modest operation costs.
